আShuborno Provaat - সুবর্ণ প্রভাতলমগীর ইউসুফ : স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের স্থপতি, ইতিহাসের মহানায়ক, সর্বকালের সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ বাঙালি জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান চিরঅম্লান-চিরভাস্বর। যতদিন রবে পদ্মা-মেঘনা-গৌরী-যমুনা বহমান, ততদিন রবে কীর্তি তোমার শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান। জয় বাংলা, জয় বঙ্গবন্ধু। বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা অর্জন, গণতান্ত্রিক রাজনীতি, অর্থনৈতিক মুক্তি, শোষণমুক্ত সমাজ গঠন এবং বাঙালি জাতির ইতিহাস-ঐতিহ্য ও সংস্কৃতিকে ধারণ ও লালনে জীবনের প্রতিটি ক্ষেত্রে ছিলেন সদাজাগ্রত। বঙ্গবন্ধু ছিলেন বিশাল ব্যক্তিত্বসম্পন্ন বিশ্বের অন্যতম দূরদর্শী রাজনৈতিক নেতা, মানবতা ও উদারতার প্রতীক, দেশ এবং মানুষের অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়ন ও স্বাধীনতার স্বপ্নদ্রষ্টা। এ মহান দেশপ্রেমিক, সৎ নিষ্ঠবান নেতা আমাদের প্রেরণা, শিক্ষা ও দীক্ষাদাতা ।


বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ভালোবাসতেন নোয়াখালীর মানুষের দেশপ্রেম, বীরত্ব, প্রাকৃতিক ও মানবসৃষ্ট দুর্যোগ মোকাবেলায় অকুতোভয় সংগ্রামী চেতনাকে। তাঁর ভালোবাসা ছিল সহযোদ্ধা নেতাকর্মীদের সাংগঠনিক নীতি ও আন্দেলন-সংগ্রামের দৃঢ়তায়। বঙ্গবন্ধুর ডাকে এ জেলার শুধু দলীয় নেতাকর্মীরা নন, তাঁর আর্দশে উজ্জীবিত হয়ে পাকিস্তানি শাসকদের রক্তচক্ষু উপেক্ষা করে এবং জীবন বাজি রেখে অসীম সাহসী ও সংগ্রামী মানুষ বীরত্বের সাথে লড়াই করেছিলেন। ১৯৫২ সালে মাতৃভাষা আন্দোলন থেকে শুরু করে ’৫৪ সালে যুক্তফ্রন্ট নির্বাচন, ’৬৬ সালে ৬-দফা ও স্বায়ত্তশাসনের দাবীর আন্দোলন, ’৬৯-এর গণঅভ্যুত্থান ও ১১-দফা আন্দোলন, ’৭০-এর নির্বাচন ও ’৭১ স্বাধীনতাযুদ্ধসহ পাকিস্তানি স্বৈরশাসক এবং শোষণবিরোধী প্রত্যেকটি আন্দোলন-সংগ্রামে এ জেলার সর্বস্তরের মানুষ ঐক্যবদ্ধ হয়ে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়েছিলেন। এসব আন্দোলন-সংগ্রামে বৃহত্তর নোয়াখালী জেলার অনেক বীরসন্তান পাকিস্তানি শাসক ও তাদের দোসর বাহিনীর গুলিতে জীবন উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন। তাদের মধ্যে ১৯৫২ সালে ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারিতে ভাষা আন্দোলনে ঢাকায় পুলিশের গুলিতে ফেনীর দাগনভূঁইয়ার আবদুস সালাম, ’৬৯-এর ১৫ ফেব্রুয়ারি গণঅভ্যুত্থানে সোনাবাহিনীর হাতে আগরতলা মামলার অন্যতম আসামি বিমানবাহিনীর সার্জেন্ট নোয়াখালী পৌরসভার সোনাপুরের জহুরুল হক শহীদ হন। ওই সময় আগরতলা মামলার অন্যতম দুই আসামি বিমানবাহিনীর সার্জেন্ট সোনাইমুড়ীর মফিজ উল্যাহ ও হাতিয়ার মাহফুজুল বারী কারারুদ্ধ হন। ১৯ ফেব্রুয়ারি সেনবাগ থানা সদরে পুলিশের গুলিতে সামছুল হক, অফিজের রহমান, খোরশেদ আলম ও আবুল কালাম শহীদ হয়েছিলেন। স্বাধীনতাযুদ্ধের শুরুতে ’৭১-এর ১৪ এপ্রিল পাকিস্তানি সেনার গুলিতে রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গণিত বিভাগের অধ্যাপক চাটখিলের বালিয়াধরের হাবিবুর রহমান, ৬ সেপ্টেম্বর বেগমগঞ্জের ঘাটলার সাহাব উদ্দিন এস্কান্দার ভুলু, ২১ নভেম্বর ডাকসুর সমাজসেবা সম্পাদক বেগমগঞ্জের কাদেরপুর ইউনিয়নের গয়েছপুরের অহিদুর রহমান অদুদ, ১০ ডিসেম্বর নৌবাহিনীর চিফ ইঞ্জিন রুম আর্টিফিসার সোনাইমুড়ীর বাগপাঁচড়ার বীরশ্রেষ্ঠ রুহুল আমীন, ১৪ ডিসেম্বর ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বাংলা বিভাগের অধ্যাপক বেগমগঞ্জের ছয়ানি ইউনিয়নের খালিশপুরের মোফাজ্জল হায়দার চৌধুরী, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধ্যাপক চাটখিলের মুনীর চৌধুরী ও লেখক-সাংবাদিক ফেনীর শহীদুল্লাহ কায়সারসহ আরো অনেক মুক্তিযোদ্ধা শহীদ হন এবং গণহত্যার শিকার হয়েছেন কয়েকশ’ মানুষ, নির্যাতনের শিকার হয়েছিলেন অসংখ্য নারী-পুরুষ। জেলার এসব কৃতি সন্তানের আত্মদান ঊনসত্তরের গণঅভ্যুত্থান ও মহান স্বাধীনতাযুদ্ধকে আরো বেগবান ও ত্বরান্বিত করেছিল।


বঙ্গবন্ধু রাজনৈতক জীবনে ১০ বার ও রাষ্ট্রের প্রধান হিসেবে ৪ বার এসেছিলেন
বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান তাঁর প্রিয় ও ভালোবাসার নোয়াখালীতে রাজনৈতিক জীবনে ৯ বার এবং রাষ্ট্রের প্রধান হিসেবে ৪ বার সফরে এসেছিলেন বলে জানিয়েছেন জেলার নেতৃস্থানীয় কয়েকজন প্রবীণ আওয়ামী লীগ ও তৎকালীন ছাত্রলীগ নেতা এবং মুক্তিযোদ্ধারা। এ সময়গুলোতে বঙ্গবন্ধুর পদচারণায় ধন্য হয়েছিল ঐতিহ্যবাহী বৃহত্তর নোয়াখালীর সংগ্রামী মানুষগুলো। বঙ্গবন্ধুর স্মৃতিবহ সেসব দিনগুলো নোয়াখালীর ইতিহাস-ঐতিহ্যের স্মারক।

বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব আওয়ামী লীগকে সুসংগঠিত করতে প্রথম নোয়াখালীতে এসেছিলেন ১৯৫৫ সালে। ওইদিন তিনি জেলা শহর মাইজদীর কেরানি ব্যারাক মাঠে (বর্তমান জেলা জনস্বাস্থ্য প্রকৌশল অধিদপ্তর) আওয়ামী লীগের জনসভায় বক্তব্য রাখেন। সে সময় বঙ্গবন্ধু ছিলেন একাধারে আওয়ামী লীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদক ও তদানীন্তন পাকিস্তান প্রাদেশিক পরিষদ সদস্য। তাঁর সাথে ছিলেন বৃহত্তর নোয়াখালী জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি সেকান্দার মিয়া উকিল, সাধারণ সম্পাদক সিরাজ উদ্দিন ছেরাজ উকিল ও সদর মহকুমা আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতি আবদুল মালেক উকিল।

১৯৬২ সালে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব দেশে গণতান্ত্রিক শাসনতন্ত্র কায়েম, গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠা ও পুনঃউদ্ধারে দলমত নির্বিশেষে জাতীয় ঐক্য গড়ে তোলার লক্ষে পাকিস্তানি স্বৈরশাসক জেনারেল আইয়ুবের বিরুদ্ধে গণআন্দোলনের ডাক দিয়েছিলেন। তিনি ন্যাশনাল ডেমোক্রেটিক ফ্রন্টের (এনডিএফ) নেতাদের নিয়ে দ্বিতীয়বার এসেছিলেন ঢাক থেকে ট্রেনযোগে জেলা শহর মাইজদীতে। বঙ্গবন্ধুর সাথে সেদিন ছিলেন গণতন্ত্রের মানসপুত্র হোসেন শহীদ সোহ্রাওয়ার্দী, মাওলানা আবদুল হামিদ খান ভাসানী, আতাউর রহমান খান, অলি আহাদ, আবুল হোসেন সরকার, মৌলভী ফরিদ আহমদ, নুরুল আমিন ও এএসএম সোলায়মানসহ এনডিএফের ৯ জাতীয় নেতা। তাঁরা জেলা শহর মাইজদীর কাছারী ময়দানে (বর্তমানে জেলা প্রশাসকের কার্যালয়) জনসভায় বক্তব্য রাখেন। সেই জনসভায় উপস্থিত ছিলেন সেকান্দার মিয়া উকিল ও সিরাজ উদ্দিন ছেরাজ উকিল ও আবদুল মালেক উকিল। সভায় মানপত্র পাঠ করেন শিক্ষা আন্দোলনে সর্বদলীয় ছাত্র সংগ্রাম পরিষদের জেলা কমিটির সভাপতি (অধ্যাপক) মোহাম্মদ হানিফ। বঙ্গবন্ধু মুজিব একই বছর তৃতীয়বার এসেছিলেন নোয়াখালী টাউন হলে। সেদিন জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের কর্মিসভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।


১৯৬৩ সালে বঙ্গবন্ধু চতুর্থবার আসেন জেলা আওয়ামী লীগকে পুনঃগঠিত করেতে বাণিজ্যিক কেন্দ্র চৌমুহনীতে। বর্তমান হকার্স মার্কেটের পাশে করিমপুর দারুল উলুম মাদ্রাসা মাঠে সেদিন দলীয় কাউন্সিল অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। ওইদিন বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান জননেতা আবদুল মালেক উকিলকে সভাপতি, জননেতা নুরুল হক মিয়াকে সাধারণ সম্পাদক ও সহিদ উদ্দিন এস্কেন্দার কচিকে সাংগঠনিক সম্পাদক করে কমিটি ঘোষণা করেন। এ সময় বঙ্গবন্ধুর সাথে ছিলেন জাতীয় নেতা মিজানুর রহমান চৌধুরী ও শাহ্ মোয়াজ্জেম হোসেন। এ কমিটি গঠন করার আগে একই বছর ১৪ এপ্রিল জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি সেকান্দার মিয়া উকিল ইন্তেকাল করেন।
১৯৬৬ সালে বঙ্গবন্ধু পঞ্চমবার আসেন বেগমগঞ্জে। ৬-দফা ও স্বায়ত্তশাসনের দাবী আদায়ের সমর্থনে জনমত গঠন এবং আন্দোলনকে বেগবান করতে বেগমগঞ্জের হেলিপ্যাড ময়দানে তিনি এক বিরাট জনসভায় বক্তব্য রাখেন। এরপর একই বছর বঙ্গবন্ধু মুজিব ষষ্ঠবার রামগতির থানা সদরে জনসভা করেন। পরে তিনি মাইজদীতে জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি মরহুম সেকান্দার মিয়া উকিলের বাসায় আসেন। তার পরিবারের খোঁজখবর নেন। সে বাসায় খাওয়া-দাওয়ার পর কিছুক্ষণ বিশ্রাম নিয়ে তিনি ঢাকার উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা হন। প্রসঙ্গত, জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সেকান্দার মিয়া উকিল ছিলেন সাবেক এমপিএ (পূর্ব পাকিস্তান প্রাদেশিক পরিষদ সদস্য), জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের সাবেক সভাপতি ও নোয়াখালী পৌরসভার চেয়ারম্যান মরহুম সহিদ উদ্দিন এস্কেন্দার কচি ভাইয়ের পিতা।

১৯৬৮ সালে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব সপ্তমবার টর্ণেডোতে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত নোয়াখালীর মানুষদের দেখতে বেগমগঞ্জের রাজগঞ্জ এলাকা পরিদর্শনে আসেন। যেদিন বঙ্গবন্ধু নোয়াখালীর উদ্দেশ্যে ঢাকা থেকে রওয়ানা হয়েছিলেন তার আড়াইদিন পর সন্ধ্যায় তিনি পৌঁছেন চৌমুহনীতে। ঢাকা থেকে নোয়াখালী আসার সময় বঙ্গবন্ধুকে একনজর দেখতে পথে পথে লাখ লাখ মানুষের ঢল নামে। এ সময় অসংখ্য পথসভা ও জনসভায় তাঁকে বক্তৃতা করতে হয়েছিল। রাতে তিনি মাইজদী বাজার হয়ে রাজগঞ্জের ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত এলাকা পরির্দশন করেন এবং ওই রাতেই ঢাকায় ফিরে যান।

১৯৬৯ সালে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান অষ্টমবার আসেন সেনবাগ থানা সদরে। গণআন্দোলন চলাকালীন সার্জেন্ট জহুরুল হক ও প্রফেসর ড. শামছুজ্জোহাকে গুলি করে হত্যার প্রতিবাদে যখন দেশব্যাপী আন্দোলন তুঙ্গে তখন ছ্ত্রা- জনতা ১৯ ফের্রুয়ারি সকালে সেনবাগ থানায় পাকিস্তানি পতাকা নামিয়ে কালো পতাকা উত্তোলনে করতে গেলে পুলিশ পুলিশ গুলি চালালে সেনবাগ মাদ্রাসার চতুর্থ শ্রেণীর ছাত্র আবদুল কালাম শহীদ হন। এ খবর চারি দিকে ছড়িয়ে পড়লে হাজার হাজার উত্তোজিত ছাত্র-জনতা থানা ঘেরাও করে ইটপাটকেল নিক্ষেপ করে ও পুলিশের একটি টিনের ছাউনিতে আগুন ধরিয়ে দেয়। এসময় পুলিশ গুলি চালালে ঘটনাস্থলে শহীদ হন সেনবাগ হাই স্কুলের দশম শ্রেণীর ছাত্র সামছুল হক, মোহাম্মদ পুরের খোরশেদ আলম ও অর্জুতলার কৃষক অফিজের রহমান। আহত হন অর্ধশতাধিক ছাত্র-জনতা । এ ঘটনার দুইদিন পর ২২ ফের্রুয়ারি বঙ্গবন্ধু মুজিব শহীদ পরিবারগুলোকে শান্তনা জানাতে সেবাগে আসেন। তিনি শহীদ অফিজের রহমানের কবর জিয়ারত করেন। এময় তাঁর সাথে ছিলেন জেলার নেতারা। সে সময় বঙ্গবন্ধুর উপর বক্তৃতা প্রদানে নিষেধাজ্ঞা চলমান থাকায় তিনি প্রতিবাদী সমাবেশে বক্তৃতা করতে পারেননি।

১৯৭০ সালে বঙ্গবন্ধু মুজিব নবমবার আসেন পকিস্তান জাতীয় পরিষদ(এমএনএ) ও প্রাদেশিক পরিষদ(এমপিএ) নির্বাচনের প্রচারণা উপলক্ষে বেগমগঞ্জে। হেলিপ্যাড ময়দান সংলগ্ন মাঠে (বর্তমান কৃষি ইনস্টিটিউট) এক বিশাল জনসভায় তিনি বক্তব্য রাখেন। সেদিন তাঁকে দেখতে ও তার বজ্রকণ্ঠের বক্তৃতা শুনতে জেলার প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চল থেকে আসা লাখো মানুষের ঢল নামে সভাস্থল কাদামাটির মাঠে। ধান কাটার পর মাঠ ছিল কাদামাটিতে ভরা, তার উপর বৃষ্টির পানি জমাট। সেই কাদামাটি ভরা জনসভাস্থলে জেলার বিভিন্ন স্থান থেকে নিয়ে আসা হয়েছিলে ধানের খড়। কাদামাটির উপরে বিছিয়ে দেয়া হয়েছিল সে খড়। বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ঢাকা থেকে যখন সভাস্থলে এসে পৌঁছলেন, তখন পাকিস্তানি শাসক-শোসকদের বিরুদ্ধে সংগ্রামী জনতা গগনবিদারী শ্লোগান দিতে থাকেনÑ “আমার নেতা-তোমার নেতা শেখ মুজিব-শেখ মুজিব, বাংলাদেশের নেতা কেÑ শেখ মুজিব-শেখ মুজিব, শেখ মুজিবের মার্কা কি-নৌকা ছাড়া আবার কি, আমার-তোমার মার্কাÑ নৌকা নৌকা, আমি কে-তুমি কে বাঙালি-বাঙালি, বীর বাঙালি অস্ত্র ধর-বাংলাদেশ স্বাধীন কর, তোমার-আমার ঠিকানা পদ্মা-মেঘনা-যমুনা, পাঞ্জাব না বাংলা, বাংলা-বাংলা, পিন্ডি না ঢাকাÑ ঢাকা-ঢাকা,মুজির না আইয়ুব,মুজিব-মুজিব।” জনতার শ্লোগানে শ্লোগানে সেদিন পুরো এলাকা প্রকম্পিত করে তোলে। সে সময় এ শ্লোগানগুলো সারা দেশের স্বাধীনতাকামী সাধারণ মানুষের মুখে মুখে ফিরতো এবং তাদেরকে পাকিস্তানি স্বৈরশাসকদের বিরুদ্ধে আন্দোলন-সংগ্রামে উজ্জীবিত করতো।

বিশাল মাঠের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিম প্রান্তে নির্মিত জনসভামঞ্চে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান যখন উঠলেন, তখন পাকিস্তানি শোসকদের বিরুদ্ধে দুটি সাহসী নতুন শ্লোগান দিতে থাকেন তৎকালীন কেন্দ্রীয় ছাত্রলীগ নেতা ও মুক্তিযুদ্ধের অন্যতম সংগঠক সিরাজুল আলম খান ও আবদুর রাজ্জাক। শ্লোগান দুটি ছিলÑ আর নয় পাকিস্তান, এবার চাই বাংলাদেশ, জিন্নাহ মিয়ার পাকিস্তান-আজিমপুরের গোরস্তান। মঞ্চে এই দুই ছাত্রনেতার সাথে কণ্ঠ মিলিয়ে শ্লোগান তুলেছিলেন চৌমুহনী কলেজ ছাত্র সংসদের সে সময়কার ভিপি মোহাম্মদ উল্যাহ।

এ স্মরণীয় শ্লোগান বঙ্গবন্ধুকে হতবাক করেছিল। বঙ্গবন্ধু তাঁর বক্তৃতাকালে বলেছিলেন, নোয়াখালীবাসী আমাকে ও দেশের সংগ্রামী মানুষকে উজ্জীবিত করতে আরো দুটি শ্লোগান উপহার দিলেন। এরপর থেকে সারা দেশে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে এ শ্লোগান দুটি। বঙ্গবন্ধু এ জনসভায় আরো বলেছিলেন, এ জেলার কৃতিসন্তান সার্জেন্ট জহুরের আত্মত্যাগ নতুনভাবে বাংলার মানুষকে আন্দোলন-সংগ্রামে আরো উজ্জীবিত করেছে।

এ সভায় সভাপতিত্ব করেন জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতি জননেতা আবদুল মালেক উকিল। এ জনসভায় খোন্দকার মোস্তাক আহম্মদ (বঙ্গবন্ধুর খুনি) ও জেলার সাধারণ সম্পাদক জননেতা নুরুল হক মিয়া,আবদুর রশিদ মিয়া,সহিদ উদ্দিন এস্কেন্দার কচি,অধ্যাপক মোহাম্মদ হানিফসহ দলীয় ও ছাত্রলীগের অনেক শীর্ষ নেতা উপস্থিত ছিলেন। জনসভা শেষে বঙ্গবন্ধু জেলা শহর মাইজদীতে আবদুল মালেক উকিলের বাসায় আসেন এবং জেলার শীর্ষ নেতাদের সাথে বৈঠক করেন। বঙ্গবন্ধুকে একনজর দেখার জন্য এ বাসার সামনে হাজারো মানুষের ভিড় জমে। এ সময় বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব বাসার বাইরে এসে চেয়ারের উপর দাঁড়িয়ে দু’হাত নেড়ে তার ভালোবাসার মানুষগুলোকে সম্ভাষণ জানালেন ।

বঙ্গবন্ধু একই বছর দশমবার আসেন হাতিয়া ও রামগতিতে। ১৯৭০ সালের ১২ নভেম্বর রাতে বাংলাদেশের উপকূলীয় অঞ্চলের মানুষের জীবনে নেমে আসে এক মহাদুর্যোগ। ইতিহাসে চিরস্মরণীয় প্রলয়ঙ্করী ঘূর্ণিঝড় ও জলোচ্ছ্বাসে বিরানভূমিতে পরিণত হয় উপকূলের বিস্তীর্ণ জনপদ। সেদিন নোয়াখালী, ভোলা, পটুয়াখালী, বরিশাল ও চট্টগ্রামসহ উপকূলীয় অঞ্চলে প্রাণ হারিয়েছিল ১০ লক্ষাধিক মানুষ এবং লাখ লাখ গবাদিপশু, পাখি ও জীবজন্তু। সাগরে ভেসে যায় হাজার হাজার মানুষ, গবাদিপশু, জীবজন্তু। বাড়িঘর, গাছপালা, ফসল ও ফসলের মাঠ এবং জনপদ সম্পূর্ণরূপে নিশ্চিহ্ন হয়ে যায়। সেদিনের মহাপ্রলয়ে নোয়াখালীর হাতিয়া, চরবাটা, চরলক্ষ্মী, চরজব্বার, রামগতি ও সোনাগাজী এলাকার ৫ লক্ষাধিক মানুষের সলিল সমাধি ঘটে। এসব এলাকার স্বজন ও সহায়-সম্পদহারা বেঁচে থাকা মানুষের দুর্দশা ছিল অবর্ণনীয়। ইতিহাসের বৃহত্তম এ ট্র্যাজেডিকে ধামাচাপা দিতে তখন পাকিস্তানের প্রচার মাধ্যমগুলো চেষ্টা চালায়। এ পরিস্থিতিতে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ব্যাকুল হয়ে উপকূলীয় এলাকার মানুষের দুর্দশা দেখতে ঢাকা থেকে ছুটে আসেন। ১৪ নভেন্বর প্রথমে ভোলায়, তার পরদিন ভোলা থেকে লঞ্চযোগে রামগতি ও হাতিয়ায় এসে দূর্গত এলাকা পরির্দশন করেন। দূর্গত এলাকা পরির্দশনকালে বঙ্গবন্ধু দুর্দশাগ্রস্ত মানুষের অসহায়ত্ব ও কান্না দেখে অস্থির হয়ে পড়েন। পরে হাতিয়া হাইস্কুল মাঠে এক জনসমাবেশে সংক্ষিপ্ত বক্তব্য রাখেন। তখন তাঁর সাথে ছিলেন দেলোয়ার উকিল, ওয়ালী উল্যা কামাল উদ্দিন উকিল ও বঙ্গবন্ধুর প্রিন্স কামাল উদ্দিন। সেদিন তিনি লঞ্চে ঢাকা ফিরে গিয়ে সংবাদ সম্মেলনের মাধ্যমে বিশ্ববাসীকে বাংলার দুর্গত মানুষের পাশে দাঁড়ানোর আহ্বান জানান। তাঁর সে আহ্বানে সাড়া দিয়ে বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশের সাহায্য সংস্থা দুর্গত এলাকার মানুষের জন্য প্রচুর সাহায্য নিয়ে ছুটে আসেন। শুধু তাই নয়Ñ বঙ্গবন্ধুর ডাকে দেশের প্রতিটি অঞ্চলের বিত্তবান থেকে লাখ লাখ সাধারণ মানুষ দুর্গত এলাকার মানুষের সাহায্যে এগিয়ে এসেছিলেন। এ মহাদুর্যোগের কারনে উপকুলের দুর্গত এলাকায় নির্বাচন পিছিয়ে যায়।


প্রধানমন্ত্রী বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব প্রথম দেশ গড়ার ডাক দিলেন নোয়াখালী থেকে
১৯৭১ সালের ২৫ মার্চ কালরাতে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান পাকিস্তানি সেনাদের হাতে গ্রেফতার হন। প্রায় ৯ মাস পাকিস্তানের কারাগারে বন্দি থাকার পর বঙ্গবন্ধু মুক্ত হয়ে ’৭২’-এর ১০ জানুয়ারি যুদ্ধবিধস্ত স্বাধীন-সার্বভৌম বাংলাদেশে প্রত্যাবর্তন করেন। তার ঠিক একমাস ১০ দিন পর ২০ ফেব্রুয়ারি বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রী হিসেবে প্রথম সফরে আসেন দেশের প্রাচীনতম ঐতিহ্যবাহী নোয়াখালীর চরের নদীভাঙ্গা ভূমিহীন অসহায়, গরিব-দুঃখী মানুষদের দেখতে রামগতি থানার চরবাদাম ইউনিয়নের পোড়াগাছায়। দেশের প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলের এ পোড়াগাছা গ্রাম থেকে সেদিন জাতির জনক বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান যুদ্ধবিধস্ত স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশ গড়ার ডাক দিলেন। পোড়াগাছায় প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগকালীন সময় আশ্রয়ের স্থান (মাটি দিয়ে তৈরি) কিল্লায় দাঁড়িয়ে তিনি বজ্রকণ্ঠে সংক্ষিপ্ত ভাষনে বঙ্গবন্ধু জনতার উদ্যেশে বলেন, “দেশ আমাদের, এ দেশ আমাদেরকে গড়তে হবে। ফসলের উৎপাদন বাড়াতে হবে। প্রত্যেক বাড়িতে একটি করে লাউ গাছ ও সব জাতের গাছ লাগাতে হবে। স্বেচ্ছাশ্রমের মাধ্যমে দেশ গড়ার কাজ ও অর্থনৈতিক মুক্তি আন্দোলনকে এগিয়ে নিতে হবে। নদীভাঙা ভূমিহীনদের আশ্রয়ের জন্য গুচ্ছগ্রাম নির্মাণ করা হবে।”

 

 

ঐতিহাসিক এ সভা পরিচালনা করেন বাংলদেশ ছাত্রলীগের তৎকালীন সাধারণ সম্পাদক, ডাকসুর ভিপি ও স্বাধীনতার পতাকা উত্তোলক আসম আবদুর রব। সভা শেষে বঙ্গবন্ধু নিজ হাতে ওড়া (বাঁশের তৈরি টুকরি) ও কোদাল নিয়ে মাটি কেটে রামগতি-জেলা সদর মাইদজীর সংযোগ রাস্তা নির্মাণ কাজের উদ্বোধন করেন। এ সময় তাঁর সফর সঙ্গীসহ মুক্তিযোদ্ধা, সমবায়ী, স্বেচ্ছাসেবকসহ কয়েক হাজার মানুষ দুই কিলোমিটারব্যাপী সারিবদ্ধ হয়ে লাইনে দাঁড়িয়ে ঢোল-বাদ্যের তালে তালে ওড়া-কোদাল হাতে নিয়ে মাটি কেটে রাস্তা নির্মাণ কাজে অংশগ্রহণ করেন। সে সময় বঙ্গবন্ধুর পাশে ছিলেন তার দুই সফর সঙ্গী বিশ্বাসঘাতক খুনী মোস্তাক আহম্দ ও তোফায়েল আহমেদ এবং আবদুল মালেক উকিল, নুরুল হক মিয়া, সহিদ এস্কেন্দার কচি, অধ্যাপক মো. হানিফ, সিরাজুল ইসলাম, মুক্তিযুদ্ধকালীন সময়ে বৃহত্তর নোয়াখালীর বিএলএফের অধিনায়ক (প্রধান )মাহমুদুর রহমান বেলায়েত ও জেলার রামগতি-হাতিয়া ‘সি’ জোনের অধিনায়ক মোশারফ হোসেনসহ জেলার শীর্ষ ও স্থানীয় নেতারা।
জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু পোড়াগাছার যে কিল্লায় দাঁড়িয়ে দেশ গড়ার ডাক দিয়েছিলেন, সেই কিল্লা আজ মুজিব কিল্লা বা শেখের কিল্লা নামে সর্বসাধারণের কাছে পরিচিত। সেই মুজিব কিল্লাকে ঘিরে দেশের প্রথম গুচ্ছগ্রাম গড়ে উঠে। পরবর্তীতে সে গুচ্ছগ্রাম দেশের উপকূলীয় এলাকায় গড়ে উঠেছে। আজ গুচ্ছগ্রাম-আশ্রয়ন প্রকল্প ও আদর্শ গ্রাম নামে নদীভাঙা ছিন্নমূল মানুষের শেষ ঠিকানার আশ্রয় স্থান হিসেবে বঙ্গবন্ধুর সুযোগ্যকন্যা বাংলাদেশের অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়ন ও সমৃদ্ধির রূপকার জননেত্রী শেখ হাসিনার সরকার স্থাপন করেন। বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের স্মৃতিবিজড়িত সেই পোড়াগাছায় তাঁর স্মৃতি রক্ষার্থে গত কয়েক বছর আগে নোয়াখালী-রামগতি আঞ্চলিক সড়কের পাশে ‘র্ডপ’ নামের একটি বেসরকারী উন্নয়ন সংস্থা শেখের কিল্লার (মুজিব কিল্লা) নামে স্মৃতি ফলক স্থাপন করে। মুজিব কিল্লার এ স্মৃতিফলক যুগযুগ ধরে জাতির পিতাকে স্মরণীয় ও বরণীয় করে রাখবে নতুন প্রজন্মের কাছে।


প্রধানমন্ত্রী বঙ্গবন্ধুর দ্বিতীয় সফর
২২ জুন ১৯৭২ সাল। জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবর রহমান প্রধানমন্ত্রী হিসেবে দ্বিতীয়বার সফরে এলেন জেলা শহর মাইজদীতে। ইতিহাসের বরপুত্র বঙ্গবন্ধুর আগমন উপলক্ষে জেলা শহরের শহীদ ভুলু স্টেডিয়ামের জনসভার প্রস্তুতি নিয়ে মহাআয়োজনের ধুম পড়ে। জাতির পিতাকে স্বাগত জানাতে জেলাব্যাপী চলে ব্যাপক প্রচার-প্রচারনা। তোরণ, হাতের লেখা পোস্টার-ফেস্টুন ও ব্যানারে ভরে যায়। পুরো শহরজুড়ে জনস্রোত ও উৎসবের আমেজ ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল।

কয়েক দিন আগ থেকে জাতির পিতাকে বরণ করতে জেলাব্যাপী ব্যাপক প্রস্তুতি শুরু করে আওয়ামী লীগ ও সহযোগী সংগঠন, মুক্তিযোদ্ধা, জেলা ও পুলিশ প্রাশাসন, সরকারি-আধাসরকারি দপ্তর, জনপ্রতিধি, শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানের শিক্ষক-শিক্ষার্থী, ক্যাডেট দল, ক্রীড়া, সাংস্কৃতিক এবং পেশাজীবী সংগঠনসহ সর্বস্তরের সাধারণ মানুষ। বঙ্গবন্ধুকে একনজর দেখতে ও তাঁর বজ্রকণ্ঠের ভাষণ শুনতে জেলা শহরে ছুটে আছেন প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চল থেকে হাজার হাজার মানুষ। অনেকেই দু-তিন দিন আগ থেকে আত্মীয়-স্বজন, পরিচিতজনদের বাসাবাড়ি ও আবাসিক হোটেলে উঠেন।

২২ জুন সকাল থেকে জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানকে জেলাবাসীর পক্ষ থেকে বরণ করতে জননেতা মন্ত্রী আবদুল মালেক উকিলএমএনএ- সদর এর নেতৃত্বে কয়েকজন মন্ত্রী, বৃহত্তর জেলার এমএনএ আবদুর রশিদ মিয়া রামগঞ্জ-রায়পুর. নুরুল হক মিয়া-বেগমগঞ্জ দক্ষিণ-সেনবাগ, খাজা আহমেদ- ফেনী, অধ্যাপক মোহাম্মদ হানিফ-বেগমগঞ্জ উত্তর-রামগঞ্জ দক্ষিণপূর্ব, খালেদ মোহাম্মদ আলী লক্ষীপুর-রামগতি উত্তর ও দেলোয়ার উকিল হাতিয়া-রামগতি দক্ষিন এবং এমপিএ সহিদ উদ্দিন এস্কেন্দার কচি-সদর, মোহাম্মদ উলাহ রায়পুর, ছাখাওয়াত উল্যাহ উকিল-বেগমগঞ্জ দক্ষিণ, বিসমিল্লাহ মিয়া উকিল-লক্ষীপুর-রামগঞ্জেরএকাংশ,আবু নাসের চৌধুরী-কোম্পানীগঞ্জ-দাগনভূইয়া,আবদুস সোবহান-সেনবাগ, তালেব আলী-সোনাগাজী,এএনএচৌধুরী কালু মিয়া-রামগঞ্জ, খয়ের উদ্দিন উকিল-ফেনী সদর, আবদুস ছাত্তার সাফদার-পরশুরাম, আবদুল মোহাইমেন-লক্ষীপুর সদর, সিরাজুল ইসলাম-রামগতি, রফিক উল্যা মাষ্টার-বেগমগঞ্জ উত্তর, বৃৃহত্তর নোয়াখালীর বিএলএফ প্রধান মাহমুদুর রহমান বেলায়েতসহ জেলা প্রশাসনের কর্মকর্তা ও বিশিষ্টজনরা পুলিশ ট্রেনিং সেন্টার মাঠে অবস্থান নিয়েছিলেন। চারদিকে কড়া নিরাপত্তা বেষ্টনি। নিরাপত্তা বেষ্টনির বাইরে হাজার হাজার মানুষের ঢল। মানুষের চাপে বেষ্টনি যেন ভেঙে যাওয়ার উপক্রম। সকাল ১১টার দিকে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব আসলেন। হেলিকপ্টার থেকে অবতরণ করেন পুলিশ ট্রেনিং সেন্টার মাঠের অস্থায়ী হেলিপ্যাডে। এ সময় চারদিক থেকে “জয়বাংলা, জয় বঙ্গবন্ধু” জনতার এ গগনবিদারী শ্লোগান আর হেলিকপ্টারের আওয়াজ একাকার হয়ে যায়। হেলিকপ্টার থেকে অবতরণের পর বঙ্গবন্ধু চিরাচরিত স্বভাবসুলভ দু’হাত তুলে ও নেড়ে সম্ভাষণ জানিয়ে তাঁর প্রিয় আমজনতার অভিনন্দনের জবাব দিলেন। এ সময় জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবর রহমানের গলায় ফুলের মালা (সাদা কাগজ দিয়ে তৈরি) পরিয়ে বরণ করেন নেন জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের পক্ষ থেকে শহিদ উদ্দিন এস্কেন্দার কচি। কচি ভাইয়ের নির্দেশে এ মালাটি আগের রাতে কাগজ কেটে তৈরি করেছিলেন তখনকার ছাত্রলীগ নেত্রী হায়দারী সুলতানা রেজিনা। বরণ-পরবর্তী সময়ে তিনি দলীয় নেতাদের সাথে কুশন বিনিময় করেন। এরপর অভিবাদন (গার্ড অব অনার) গ্রহণ করলেন বঙ্গবন্ধু। তাঁকে অভিবাদনে সালাম জানালেন তৎকালীন ডিসি মঞ্জুরুল করিম ও এসপি আ.খার. কাজী আবদুল মোত্তালিব। পরে কুচকাওয়াজ পরিদর্শন শেষে সার্কিট হাউসে যান বঙ্গবন্ধু।

সার্কিট হাউসের হল কক্ষে বসে বঙ্গবন্ধু মুজিব শহীদ মুক্তিযোদ্ধা ও তাদের পরিবারের খোঁজখবর নেন। এসময় উপস্থিত ছিলেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী বঙ্গবন্ধুর সচিব নোয়াখালীর কৃতি সন্তান তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তান ছাত্রলীগের সভাপতি সিএসপি রফিকুল্লাহ চৌধুরী ( বর্তমান জাতীয় সংসদের স্পিকার ড.শীরিন শারমিন চৌধুরীর পিতা)।
পরে বিকাল তিনটায় শহীদ ভুলু স্টেডিয়ামে কয়েক লাখ (প্রায় তিন লক্ষাধিক) জনতার উদ্দেশে ভাষণ দেন তিনি। তিনি তার ভাষণে কৃতজ্ঞতার সাথে নোয়াখালীর জনগণের অনেক প্রশংসা করে বলেছিলেন, বাংলাদেশের স্বাধিকার আন্দোলনে শহীদ সার্জেন্ট জহুরসহ এ জেলার সূর্যসন্তানদের অবদান স্মরণীয় হয়ে থাকবে। তিনি জেলার অনেক রাজনৈতিক নেতাকর্মী ও বিশিষ্টজনদের নাম উল্লেখ করে স্মৃতিচারণ করেন। এ সময় তিনি জনতাকে দেশ গড়ার আহ্বান জানান। এ সভায় সভাপতিত্ব করেন আবদুল মালেক উকিল। সভা শেষে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ওইদিন সন্ধ্যার আগে জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি মরহুম সেকান্দার উকিলের বাসায় তার স্ত্রীকে দেখতে যান। মুক্তিযুদ্ধে শহীদ হয়েছিলেন মরহুম সেকান্দার উকিলের ছোট ছেলে সাহাব উদ্দিন এস্কেন্দার ভুলু। বঙ্গবন্ধু সে বাসায় পৌঁছে সেকান্দার উকিলের স্ত্রী-সন্তান ও শহীদ ভুলুর পরিবারের খোঁজখবর নেন এবং সান্ত্বনা দেন। সাহাব উদ্দিন এস্কেন্দার ভুলু ছিলেন সহিদ উদ্দিন এস্কেন্দার কচির ছোটভাই। যার নামে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছে শহীদ ভুলু স্টেডিয়াম। সেই রাতে বঙ্গবন্ধু নোয়াখালী সার্কিট হাউসে অবস্থান করেন। সেখানে তিনি দলীয় নেতা ও জেলাও পুলিশ প্রশাসনের শীর্ষ কর্মকর্তাদের সাথে বৈঠক করেন।

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

২৩ জুন নোয়াখালী প্রেসক্লাবের ভবনের ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপন

এইদিন সকালে জাতির জনক বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান সার্কিট হাউসের পাশে দুটি পবন গাছ লাগিয়ে বৃক্ষরোপণ অভিযানের উদ্বোধন করেন। ( বঙ্গবন্ধুর হাতে লাগানো সে দুটি পবন গাছ পরবর্তীতে পরিচর্যার অভাবে মরা যায়)। পরে সার্কিট হাউসে গার্ড অনার শেষে ১১টার দিকে বঙ্গবন্ধু আসেন নোয়াখালী প্রেসক্লাবে। এ সময় তিনি আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে প্রেসক্লাবের নতুন ভবনের ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপন করেন এবং কিছুক্ষণ পর এখান থেকেই ঢাকার উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা হয়ে যান। এ সময় বঙ্গবন্ধুর সাথে ছিলেন আবদুল মালেক উকিল, নুরুল হক মিয়া, অধ্যাপক মোহাম্মদ হানিফ, আবদুস সোবহান উকিল, বিছমিল্লাহ উকিল, সাখায়েত উল্যাহ উকিল, মাহমুদুর রহমান বেলায়েত, আবদুর রব উকিল, আওয়ামী লীগের নিবেদিত প্রাণ আবদুল জলিল মোক্তারসহ অনেকে। সে সময় প্রেসক্লাবের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি ছিলেন সহিদ উদ্দিন এস্কেন্দার কচি (অবজারভার), সাধারণ সম্পাদক ছিলেন ছায়েদুল হক চৌধুরী ছাদু মিয়া (মনিং নিউজ) এবং সদস্য ছিলেন রফিক উদ্দিন আহমে(দৈনিক ইত্তেফাক), কামাল উদ্দিন আহমেদ(দৈনিক বাংলা), বজলুর রহমান (দৈনিক সংবাদ), একেএম যোবায়ের (দৈনিক পূর্বদেশ) ও ফজলুল হক বাদল (দৈনিক পূর্বদেশ)।

নোয়াখালীতে বঙ্গবন্ধুর হাতে একমাত্র ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপনকৃত প্রতিষ্ঠান হচ্ছে নোয়াখালী প্রেসক্লাব। বঙ্গবন্ধুর হাতে ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপনকৃত সেই স্মৃতিফলকটি ৭৫’এর রাজনৈতিক পট পরিবর্তনের পর রাতের আধাঁরে দূর্বিত্তরা ভেঙ্গে ফেলে। সাবেক স্পীকার আবদুল মালেক উকিল ৮৬সালে বিরোধীদলের উপনেতা থাকাকলীন সময়ে বঙ্গবন্ধুর নামের স্মৃতিফলকটি নোয়াখালী প্রেসক্লাব ভবনে পুণঃস্থাপন করেন। এর পর রাজনৈতিক অঙ্গঁনে অনেক ঝড়-ঝপটা গেলেও নোয়াখালী প্রেসক্লাব ভবনে বঙ্গবন্ধুর নামে স্থাপিত এ স্মৃতিফলকটি আজও অক্ষত অবস্থায় আলো ছড়াচ্ছে। শুধু তাই নয়-নোয়াখালী প্রেসক্লাবে শোভা পাচ্ছে বঙ্গবন্ধুর ছবিটিও। জাতির জনক বঙ্গবন্ধুর স্মৃতিবহ ঐতিহাসিক এ ফলক তাঁকে জানতে নতুন প্রজন্মের সাংবাদিকদের কাছে অনুপ্রেরনা জোগায়। যা বঙ্গবন্ধুকে যুগ যুগ ধরে স্মরনীয়ও বরনীয় করে রাখবে।

১৯৭৩ সালে লক্ষীপুরে নির্বাচনী জনসভায়

    sure didn’t come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
    This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

    Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price,
    at just under £150, is ridiculous’

    Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
    And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who
    used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
    It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went
    quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club
    in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

    Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather
    handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The
    soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright,
    while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate
    beats throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with
    gilded ennui.

    Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous
    couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
    Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

    We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far
    better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut
    of the noisily, glossily confident.

    We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma
    that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we
    would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp
    as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream,
    are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline,
    raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at
    just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth.
    I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously.
    That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

    Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had
    a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

    The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

    According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for
    were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

    But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

    He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history. 

    ‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see
    declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

    But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of
    Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

    And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held
    the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison. 

    ‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first
    line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before
    his book launch. 

    Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr
    Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime
    Minister made. 

    ‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they
    create,’ he said.

    Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston,
    who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

    ‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and
    he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

    ‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk
    about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport
    Minister? The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

    Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer
    himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

    Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop
    mansion while so many people are struggling
    to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

    Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

    ‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get
    this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

    ‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the book
    will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
    This book is about Qantas. 

    ‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National,
    you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

    ‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not
    here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and
    it never was.’

    But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being
    had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

    ‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,
    ‘ he said.

    ‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him,
    is what I’ve seen. 

    ‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at
    the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

    ‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and
    he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

    ‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the
    International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

    ‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks
    like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the
    claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

    In Australian politics it’s regular practise
    for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their
    flight can be upgraded. 

    The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very
    direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

    ‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking
    and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

    ‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade
    where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
    You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

    ‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue
    those types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do
    that.

    ‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades
    (for Anthony Albanese).’

    Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to
    get up there. 

    ‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve experienced the front
    of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

    ‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured
    cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

    ‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to
    go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

    ‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

    Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

    But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

    Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

    ‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

    Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded
    trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.

    Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year
    despite it not always being the cheapest route, according to travel data provided to the government.

    While politicians and their staffers are required to book the
    cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.

    MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they
    can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades.

    ‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing
    bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the
    Australian Financial Review.

    ‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’

    Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed
    to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this year,
    despite there being just two months left of
    2024.

    Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to
    the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

    Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more ostentatious, with
    free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a
    discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.

    Membership to the club is ‘priceless’ – it cannot be bought for
    any amount of money nor obtained via any amount of frequent
    flyers points.

    Instead, each member is hand-picked and approved by the company’s chief executive and chairman.
