মরহুম ওবায়েদ উল্লাহ ইঞ্জিনিয়ার

সুবর্ণ প্রভাত প্রতিবেদন : মেঘনা নদীর করালগ্রাস থেকে যিনি নোয়াখালীর ভাঙনরোধে এক অবিস্মরণীয় অবদান রেখেছেন, তিনি হলেন মরহুম ওবায়েদ উল্লাহ ইঞ্জিনিয়ার। তিনি ছিলেন তৎকালীন ভারতবর্ষের একমাত্র মুসলিম মাইনিং ইঞ্জিনিয়ার। ইংল্যান্ডের বার্মিংহাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে তিনি মাইনিং ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং ডিগ্রি লাভ করেন। পরে তিনি ভারতের স্বাধীন রাজ্য ভুপালে জিওলজিস্ট এবং আফগানিস্তান রাজার অধীনে বেশ কিছুদিন কর্মরত ছিলেন। উভয় কর্মস্থলে তিনি গ্যাস, হিরা, কয়লা, ম্যাঙ্গানিজ, মাইলস্টোনসহ কয়েক ধরনের খনি আবিষ্কার করেন। ১৯২৯ সালে তিনি নিজ গ্রামে ফিরে আসেন। সে সময় মেঘনার প্রচণ্ড ভাঙন শুরু হয়। নোয়াখালী শহরের বেশকিছু অংশ এবং মোঘল স্থাপত্যের অনেক নিদর্শন মেঘনার গর্ভে বিলীন হয়ে যায়। তখন ওবায়েদ উল্লাহ মেঘনার ভাঙনরোধে বেড়িবাঁধ নির্মাণের এক সুচিন্তিত পরিকল্পনা গ্রহণ করেন। এ ব্যাপারে তিনি ইংরেজ কেন্দ্রীয় সরকারের সেচ মন্ত্রণালয়ের সঙ্গে বৈঠক করে তার পরিকল্পনা উপস্থাপন করেন। তৎকালীন ব্রিটিশ ভারতের প্রধান প্রকৌশলী স্যার ওয়েস উইলিয়াম তার প্রস্তাবিত পরিকল্পনা অসম্ভব বলে নাকচ করে দেন। তিনি তার পরিকল্পনা থেকে একটুও পিছপা না হয়ে দিগুণ উৎসাহে কয়েক হাজার মানুষের বিশাল বাহিনী নিয়ে শহরের ভাঙন মুখে আড়াআড়ি বাঁধ নির্মাণ শুরু করেন। প্রায় ৪০ ফুট উঁচু বাঁধ নির্মাণ করলে মেঘনার থাবা দুর্বল হয় এবং তার গতি পরিবর্তন হয়ে ভাঙন রোধ হয়। এই ক্ষণজন্মা মেধাবী বিচক্ষণ পুরুষ যদি সে সময় ইংরেজদের বাধায় বেড়িবাঁধ নির্মাণ না করতেন, তাহলে হয়তো আজ মেঘনার অতলগর্ভে তলিয়ে যেতো পুরো জেলা। ইঞ্জিনিয়ার ওবায়েদ উল্লাহ ১৮৭৬ সালে নোয়াখালী সদর উপজেলার সল্যাঘটাইয়া গ্রামে এক সম্ভ্রান্ত পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তার পিতা মুন্সি রমজান আলী ও মা জমিলা খাতুন।
ছোটবেলা থেকে ওবায়েদ উল্লাহ অত্যন্ত মেধাবী ছিলেন। তিনি যখন পুরাতন জেলা শহরের একটি স্কুলে পড়তেন তখনকার ইংরেজ জেলা ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট তার মেধায় মুগ্ধ হয়ে তাকে খুবই স্নেহ করতেন। এই ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট বরিশালে বদলী হলে তিনি ওবায়েদ উল্ল্যাহকে সাথে নিয়ে যান এবং বরিশাল জেলা স্কুলে ভর্তি করিয়ে দেন। সে স্কুল থেকে ওবায়েদ উল্লাহ এন্ট্রাস পরীক্ষায় প্রথম বিভাগে প্রথম স্থান অধিকার করেন। পরবর্তীতে তিনি ভারতের শিবপুর ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং কলেজে ভর্তি হন। সে কলেজে তিনি প্রথম ব্যাচের ছাত্র ছিলেন। সেখান থেকে কৃতিত্বের সাথে ফাইনাল পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ হয়ে সেই ইংরেজ জেলা ম্যাজিস্ট্রেটের সহযোগিতায় ইংল্যান্ডের বার্মিংহাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে খনিজ ও প্রকৌশল বিভাগে ভর্তি হন এবং সেখান থেকে কৃতিত্বের সাথে ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং পাস করেন। ওবায়েদ উল্লাহ ইঞ্জিনিয়ার নোয়াখালী পৌরসভার চেয়ারম্যান ছিলেন। ১৯৩৬ সালের ১৪ ফেব্রুয়ারি ৬০ বছর বয়সে এই ক্ষণজন্মা পুরুষ তার নিজ বাড়িতে শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেন। ওবায়েদ উল্লাহ মেমোরিয়াল হাইস্কুল তার নামেই প্রতিষ্ঠিত।
